We would like to introduce you to the unique store SterK, part of the Dr. Schroeder van der Kolk Foundation. This social enterprise has been a household name in the city for over 100 years, focusing on sustainability and social impact.

At Schroeder van der Kolk, they are committed to a sustainable future by contributing to the reduction of waste in the region. They do this by giving items a second chance through our thrift stores. Under the SterK label, they focus on re- and upcycling used materials such as wooden furniture, textiles, clothing and paper.

The unique concept of SterK

In upcycle store SterK, they sell refurbished furniture and upcycled products. Their employees, who gain work experience as part of labor market reintegration or participate in occupational day activities, give the furniture a new lease on life. In SterK’s well-equipped woodworking shop, they remove old paint and stain residues with a sandblasting machine and apply a new layer of stain, wax or lacquer to the furniture. If necessary, they reupholster the furniture in their sewing workshop. Thanks to the craftsmanship of their people, the furniture looks as good as new and is ready for a second life.

Creativity and craftsmanship

They also receive many items through our thrift stores that are too outdated or damaged to resell. Under the motto “Schroeder gives items a second chance,” SterK’s employees create new products from them. In their sewing workshop, they make cushions, stuffed animals, aprons, and bags from clothing and textiles that they cannot sell or repair. They also use these materials for upholstering and refurbishing furniture.

Second-hand branded clothing and recycled products

At SterK, you will also find the best second-hand branded clothing and other products made from recycled materials such as paper, plastics and textiles. Everything they sell contributes to a more sustainable world and supports our mission to reduce waste and provide opportunities for people with a distance to the labor market.
