Saskia van Amerongen: professional tidying expert

In The Hague, there are 260,220 homes, with 41% being owner-occupied and 58% rented. As a professional organizer, I visit various homes, from rental apartments to historic family-owned houses.

Recently, a client living in a rental property admitted she hadn't really made the house to her liking because she thought she would only be there temporarily. She has now lived there for eight years.

With another client who is about to sell her house, I helped with decluttering. After that, she finally tackled the long list of home maintenance tasks to make her house look perfect for potential new owners:

  • replacing caulking

  • oiling squeaky doors

  • installing baseboards

  • fixing a broken window

  • repairing a leaking faucet

Energy and love
Why should you only make your house a home if you plan to stay long-term or when selling? It’s important to invest that energy and love in your current space, allowing you to unwind after a day in the city.

Coming home
You might wonder why I, as a professional organizer, discuss home repairs. It’s because decluttering and home maintenance go hand in hand. It’s about taking care of your space, and thereby yourself. Whether you live in a temporary rental or your 'forever home,' coming home should be a daily gift.

Feeling overwhelmed?
Feeling overwhelmed by taking care of your home? Start with three small tasks this month, like fixing a loose baseboard or a broken lamp. You'll find that the satisfaction of completing these tasks makes it easier to tackle more.

Start by decluttering
If home repairs still feel like too much because you're overwhelmed by your belongings, start by decluttering. Keep only what truly serves you. This creates space to gradually turn your house into a home.

And that is where I come in…

From my experience decluttering various homes with many different people and stories, I know that working together makes the process of decluttering easier. It always turns out to be less daunting than you imagined it would be. I promise.
